ASSIST NEWS

  • Free Income Tax Preparation for 2011 Taxes will begin in late January 2012.  The Assist Agency partners with the Internal Revenue Service to provide free tax preparation for low income individuals during the 2011 tax filing season. In preparation for this program, the ASSIST employees received training on Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax benefits that are available. The EITC is a refundable income tax credit for low-income working individuals and families to offset the burden of Social Security taxes and to provide an incentive to work. When the EITC exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund to those who claim and qualify for the credit.

  • Assistance for families who want to become first-time homeowners is available through our IDA program.  In conjunction with Southern University, we offer a program that assists families, who meet the requirements, the opportunity to work towards saving for a home.  Once the family meets all the requirements and saves $1000, Southern University Center for Social Research will match that with $4000 - giving the family $5000 towards the purchase of their home.  Interested in this great opportunity?  Call 337-788-7550 ext. 138 for more information.
